Although there is no definite date as to when smocking was developed there have been actual traces of its beginnings back to the middle ages and as far back as the early 1100's. Examples in history are seen in England, Italy, Germany and Hungary to name a few.

	Smocking was developed before elastic was invented as it gives stretch to the fabric.  It can be used in collars, sleeves and bodices of dresses, shirts and blouses.

The lightweight fabrics are placed in pleaters to gather the fabric before the design or pattern is embroidered on the fabric creating the most exquisite hand smocked and hand embroidered creations.
